Read the following extract:
Skateboard parks are being built all around the country, giving people with BMX Bikes, scooters and skateboards a place of their own to gather and practice their many maneuvers. Parks commonly boast such features as smooth skating surfaces, and modern equipment includinng ramps, quarter and half pipes, spines and grind rails. Some even include a safe section for spectators.
Imagine if we could have a skateboard park at Tarawera High School. Have you thought of building one for the school? It really is not that difficult, all you need is permission from Mrs Tuhoro and the Board of Trustees, time and the willingness to fund raise.
First you need to decide what you are going to build. A simple ramp or a rail can be built in a couple of hours, while a half pipe might take you and your adult helpers a couple of weeks..Having a well thought out plan can save you a lot of hassles. Getting the help of your parents and other adults can be useful.
Some ideas to get you going may include talking to our Technology teacher to see if they could help get a ramp or half pipe built as a class project Another possibility is asking your parents for building supplies instead of clothes for presents.Pool money together as a group. Do sausage sizzles.Don't forget that plans for building rails, halfpipes and other ramps can be downloaded free from different internet sites.. It is important that the design and the construction of the park be solid.
The construction of all parks must be safe for users. Make sure that the finished product is checked over by a qualified adult before the first skater tries it out. Skateboarding is difficult enough without having to contend with a rail or ramp collapsing during use.
A good skateboard park should be fluid, diverse and challenging. With a single push, one should be able to skate the entire park.
After Reading the extract:
1. Why is it a good thing for a skater to be able to skate the whole park with a single push?
2. What are 4 different components of a skateboard park?
3. What could you do to raise funds to build a skate-park at Tarawera high?
4. This article makes a number of suggestions as to waht items might be included in a park. What are three items you would be sure to include?
5. How does skateboarding provide the participant with a real sense of self-satisfaction?
Draw a plan of the Skateboard Park you would like to see developed here at school.
